Canal Lock, The

Painting, watercolour on paper, mounted and set within a gilt wooden frame, 'The Canal Lock', Kennet and Avon Canal, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, painted by William Herbert Allen, of Farnham, Surrey, about 1940.

Probably on the Kennet and Avon Canal; the canal leads from the left foreground and curves to the right behind the lock keeper's cottage; the lock gates are closed; on the far side are tall trees which are reflected in the water below, beyond sheep are grazing; there are low white washed cottages behind and hills beyond.

This is one of the last works that Allen showed at the Royal Society.
